By the end of 2011, Beijing will become the world’s first metropolis with large scale Wi-Fi coverage, including even the areas which are at the outskirts of the city.
The Chinese authorities have already attempted something similar on the occasion of the 2008 Olympic Games, but the Wi-Fi network installed on the streets around the “Bird Nest” Olympic stadium had a very low signal.
After that incident, the deputy director of the Beijing IT department has announced the great plan of installing a wireless network that would cover the entire metropolis.
Accessing the network will be free of charge and the citizens will not even have to pay a fee for the equipments used or anything similar.
It kind of makes you want to change countries, doesn’t it?
